When it comes to psoriasis, you need to be In-the-Know pSo Savvy

When you have psoriasis, you need to take care of you first. That means taking charge of your own health and being well-informed. So first of all, props to you for being here in the first place; that’s a step in the right direction!

Here’s the thing: there are many ways to manage psoriasis. Your lifestyle counts and so does your treatment approach.

Keep these pointers in mind:

  • Be your own champion. It may sound lame, but it’s true: You are your own best advocate. So why keep your mouth zipped? Ask questions if you don’t get stuff. Nobody’s going to fault you for that!
  • Know where to go. Research has found that as many as 40% to 50% of people with psoriasis are unsatisfied with their treatment. And the thing is, there’s often more that can be done; many options are available and should be discussed with your healthcare providers.
  • Build yourself a healthcare team. Your family doctor is your primary contact, but you can see a dermatologist, too. If there’s a psoriasis treatment centre near you, you might want to ask for a referral. Pharmacists are experts on medications, so develop a good relationship with your pharmacist, as well. Rheumatologists, dietitians, registered massage therapists, psychologists and other licenced healthcare professionals should also be factored into your psoriasis attack team. Follow up regularly with your team, and communicate your experience and expectations. You’ll be better off for it.
  • Network with other people who have psoriasis. Reach out to associations, support groups, and meet-up groups. Check out online forums and blogs, too. Keep in mind that there is a lot of misinformation out there, so consider the source. Check our helpful resources section for some great sources of information on psoriasis.
